The Japanese Vehicle Market in 2015 (Q1)

The Japanese new vehicle market, including passenger cars, trucks and buses, contracted by 14.4% during the first quarter of 2015 to 1,578,879 vehicles. Manufacturers of heavy vehicles generally performed better than carmakers indicating more strength in the Japanese economy.

The contraction at the start of 2015 was largely expected. A sales tax increase on April 1, 2014, encouraged Japanese buyers to bring purchases forward leading to an exceptionally strong first quarter last year. Vehicle sales in Japan during the first three months of 2015 were still around 50,000 vehicles more than during the same period in 2013.
