Car Sales in European Countries

Car sales in all European countries were lower during the first three quarters of 2020 compared to 2019. Norway was the best performer with sales down by only 14%. Finland was the top-performing EU new car market with sales down 16.5%. Denmark and Sweden also saw sales lower by only 18% making Scandinavia the best-performing car market region in Europe thus far this year. The three worst-performing markets were Croatia, Portugal, and Spain.

Germany remained by far the largest single-country car market in Europe with sales down by a quarter during the first nine months of the year. The German new car market was almost 700,000 cars smaller than January to September 2019.

New passenger vehicle registrations in Britain were down by a third — 620,000 fewer cars than a year ago. In addition to the social and economic effects of Covid-19, political uncertainty regarding Brexit may influence the market in the final months of the year. A no-deal exit may mean cars are cheaper in the final months of 2020 than from 2021.

In France, car sales during the first three quarters of 2020 were largely in line with the EU average. However, sales were sharply down in both Italy and Spain.

The only rank order change amongst the top ten European new car markets was Sweden moving ahead of Austria.

The best-selling carmaker and brand in Europe during the first three quarters of 2020 remained Volkswagen with the VW Golf still the best-selling car.
