Volkswagen produced its 2 millionth electric car in 2026, with the ID4 and ID3 the top-selling VW BEV models worldwide since electric car series production started in 2013.

Volkswagen announced that the total production of VW electric cars worldwide reached two million BEV vehicles in February 2026. Coincidentally, in the same month, Germany registered its two millionth electric car, while the 49 millionth car left the Wolfsburg car factory. Globally, the most popular VW brand electric car models are the ID4, ID3, and ID7.
Volkswagen BEV Electric Car Production and Sales Worldwide by Model

Volkswagen commenced series production of all-electric cars in 2013 with the e-up! It was followed by the e-Golf, which was produced in relatively low numbers. Despite the limited range of the e-Golf, it remains very highly praised in the German second-hand market for reliability and cheap running costs.
However, the three all-time best-selling Volkswagen electric car models are the three designed specifically on BEV platforms:
The VW ID4 is, with 901,000 deliveries, by far the most popular electric car ever made by Volkswagen. Although sales outside Europe, especially in the USA and China, remained below expectations, it is the SUV model with which VW entered global markets as an electric carmaker. (Sales of the ID5 are included with the ID4.)
Volkswagen produced 628,000 of the VW ID3, its first car on a dedicated electric car platform. At its launch in 2020, the car was initially widely criticised in Germany for being too expensive and the quality too cheap for the price. Reviews improved following updates several years later.
VW sold 132,000 of the larger VW ID7 since production started in 2023. The ID7, which is the size of the regular Passat, was probably the first VW electric car to receive wide acceptance in Germany. It was the most popular electric car model in Germany in 2025.
Volkswagen did not release sales figures for the VW Buzz, which is produced by its commercial division.
In 2025, the Volkswagen brand sold 382,000 all-electric cars worldwide, while BYD produced 2.2 million and Tesla 1.65 million BEVs globally. VW hopes that the launch of the smaller electric Polo towards the end of 2026 will increase volumes.
Two Million All-Electric Cars in Germany in 2026
Although Germany is keen to promote its environmental aims, the total number of electric cars registered for use on public roads only exceeded two million BEVs at the end of 2025.
On 1 January 2026, a total of 2,034,260 BEV cars were registered in Germany. This compares to only 34,000 in 2017 and a million at the start of 2023. At the start of 2025, the total number of passenger cars registered in Germany was 49.3 million.
At the same time, “elektro” cars, i.e., BEV and Plug-in Hybrids, exceeded three million registered cars in Germany at the end of 2025.
49 Million Cars Produced in Wolfsburg

On 8 February 2026, the 49 millionth car was produced at the main Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg — this VW Tiguan is destined for a customer in Taiwan. Volkswagen claims more cars were produced here than any other factory in the world.
Volkswagen considers the VW Typ 1 (later known as the Beetle or K盲fer) produced on 27 December 1945 as the first car from the Wolfsburg factory. More than 50 models were made in Wolfsburg in the past 80 years — mostly Volkswagens but also some for Audi and Seat.
The most-produced car model in Wolfsburg is the Golf (21.5 million), followed by the Beetle (10.8 million) and the Tiguan (3.9 million). In 2025, VW produced 577,444 cars in Wolfsburg. The annual record production is 958,508, achieved in 1964.
