In 2008, the VW Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda) easily held on to its traditional position as top-selling car manufacturer in Europe (European Union and European Free Trade Association countries). Peugeot-Citroen (PSA) maintained its second place while the Ford Group (Ford and Volvo) pulled ahead of the GM Group (Opel/Vauxhall, Chevrolet, and Saab) to become the third strongest seller of passenger vehicles in Europe in 2008.

In 2007, 15,958,871 new passenger cars were registered in the European Union (EU) and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) countries. The European new car market was relatively flat showing only a 1.1% increase over 2006 when 15,782,959 new cars were registered. The important German market was down while the other three large markets – Italy, Britain, and France – showed only modest growth.

Europe’s favorite car model in 2007, according to Jato, was the Peugeot 207, followed by the VW Golf and the Ford Focus.
