2024 (January to December): the Chinese new car market expanded to 31.44 million vehicles while vehicle production in China increased to 31.3 million vehicles. Chinese carmakers had a 65% share of the domestic market in 2024. Car exports from China increased by nearly a fifth with 5.9 million vehicles exported including nearly a million battery-electric cars. The largest car exporters from China in 2024 were Chery and SAIC.
China Car Production and Market in 2024
In 2024, China produced 31.3 million vehicles (+3.7%) while the total new vehicle market increased by 4.5% to 31.44 million vehicles, according to CAAM.
The production of new energy vehicles (NEV) increased by 34.4% to nearly 12.9 million vehicles in 2024, which marked a decade of Chinese leadership in NEV production. NEV had a market share of 41% in 2024, an increase of 9%.
Battery-electric vehicles (BEV) had a 60% share of the NEV market while the share of Plug-in Hybrids increased to 40%.
The number of Chinese produced cars sold in China in 2024 increased by 23.1% to nearly 18 million cars — nearly two-thirds of the total market.
China Car Exports in 2024
In 2024, Chinese vehicle exports increased by 19.3% to 5.86 million vehicles. These exports included 4.96 million passenger cars (+19.7%) and 900,000 commercial vehicles (+17.5%).
Of all Chinese vehicle exports in 2024, nearly 1.3 million were NEV (+7%) including 987,000 all-electric cars (BEV). BEV exports were 10% lower and reflected the change in market conditions in Europe as well as commercial measures taken against Chinese electric car exports in the USA, Canada, and the EU.
