2024 (January to December): BYD had another record year with worldwide car production and global sales increasing by over 40%. BYD was narrowly the world’s largest producer of battery-electric passenger vehicles although Tesla had higher worldwide electric car deliveries in 2024.

Chinese car producer BYD reported worldwide vehicle production and sales as follows for the full calendar year 2024:

2024 was another record year for BYD with global car production and sales increasing by over 40%. Most of the growth came from plug-in hybrid vehicles with battery-electric car production and sales increasing by a more moderate 12%. Production and sales of commercial vehicles also increased sharply but the overall volumes remain relatively small.
BYD World’s Largest Vehicle Producer of Electric Passenger Cars in 2024
Based on these unaudited car production data, BYD was the world’s largest producer of battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in 2024. BYD produced only 4,522 battery electric cars more than Tesla in 2024. However, BYDs worldwide sales were 24,234 fewer than Tesla’s global deliveries in full year 2024.
BYD continued to expand and enter global markets. However, in December 2024 only 57,154 vehicle sales were in markets outside China.
