In full-year 2024, the Volkswagen Group sold 3.4% fewer battery electric cars worldwide with the VW ID4 the top-selling all-electric model.

In 2024, the various brands of the Volkswagen Group delivered only 744,800 BEvs worldwide — a 3.4 decrease on the 771,100 electric vehicles sold globally in 2024. The total VW Group thus delivered over a million fewer electric cars globally than Tesla and BYD each managed. A lack of new models in the pipeline for 2025 hints at a very challenging year for VW despite claims of full order books in Europe.
Volkswagen Group Electric Car Sales by Region in 2024
The battery-electric vehicle (BEV), or all-electric cars, sales by all brands in the Volkswagen Group were as follows in major countries or regions of the world in 2024:
Market / Country | Sales 2024 | Sales 2023 | % Change |
Europe | 447,900 | 472,400 | -5.2 |
USA | 49,400 | 71,000 | -30.5 |
China | 207,400 | 191,800 | +8.1 |
Rest of the world | 40,100 | 35,800 | +12.0 |
World | 744,800 | 771,100 | -3.4 |
Although the BEV share of 8.3 percent for the full year was at the previous year’s level, Volkswagen is clearly falling behind the global leaders. The Group increased BEVs in China (+8 percent) but sales were down in the USA (-30 percent).
The Volkswagen Group remained BEV market leader in Europe despite lower deliveries (market share around 21 percent). BEV share reached a high point of 9.5 percent worldwide in Q4. BEV deliveries in Europe increased significantly in the same period despite the difficult market environment in Germany (+18 percent). However, heavy discounting was required by all manufacturers to shift electric cars towards the end of the year to avoid heavy fines.
The VW Group claims that the BEV order intake in Western Europe was up around 88 percent year-on-year. BEV order bank in Western Europe stands at around 170,000 vehicles, partly driven by new models such as the VW ID.7 Tourer, Audi Q6 e-tron, and Porsche Macan Electric.
