2026 (First Half): Battery-electric car sales in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) increased by 35.1%, with all-electric sales up 51% in June 2026.

Sales of battery-electric cars (BEV) increased by more than a third to 1,608,200 all-electric cars in Europe in the first half of 2026. In June 2026, BEV sales increased by 51% for a 25.6% share of the total European new car market. The largest European markets for electric car sales thus far in 2026 were Germany, Britain, France, Belgium, and Denmark. The total European new car market expanded by 6.1% to 7,232,066 cars in the first half of 2026, with Volkswagen the top-selling brand despite losing market share.

Electric Car Sales in Europe in 2026 (Half Year)

In 2026 (HY), new battery-electric car sales in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) increased by 35.1% to 1,608,200 all-electric cars. In the European Union (EU), BEV sales increased by an even stronger 40.5% to 1,220,890 all-electric cars.
The share of battery-electric passenger vehicles in Europe in the first half of 2026 increased to 22.2%. In the European Union, the share of BEVs increased to 20.7%. Petrol cars in the EU slipped to 22.2% and diesels to only 7.5%, excluding hybrids.
Germany and Britain remained the largest markets in Europe for electric cars during the first half of 2026, but sales growth was faster in France. In Italy, electric car sales increased by 77.7%, but actual volumes (and market share) still lag well behind those of other large European markets, with BEVs at only 8.5% market share. In Spain, only a tenth of new car sales were for electric cars, but growth is expected following the introduction of new incentives.
Electric Car Sales in Europe in 2026 (June)
In June 2026, new battery-electric passenger vehicle registrations in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) increased by 51% to 360,843 BEVs. In the European Union, all-electric car sales increased by 60.7% to 270,557 BEVs.
In June 2026, Germany, the UK, and France remained by far the largest European markets for electric cars. In all three of the largest car markets in Europe, the share of new electric vehicles was almost 30%.
An increase in fuel prices due to the conflict in Iran saw a sharp increase in queries for electric cars in most markets. Although the current geopolitical instability has a negative influence on overall market sentiment, it could lead to further interest in electric cars. More interesting and cheaper electric cars are also reaching the European market, with the Volkswagen Group finally entering the lower end of the market later in the year.

Key Trends in European Electric Car Sales
In the first half of 2026, Germany, Britain, and France remained the largest country markets in Europe for all-electric cars. In Germany and the UK, a quarter of all new car sales were electric, while the expansion in France was even faster.
BEV sales in Italy increased by 77.7%, but the market share remains below 10%. In Spain, electric cars similarly had a small market share, but this is expected to increase later in the year following the implementation of new incentives.
The only European country with lower electric car sales during the first half of the year was the Netherlands, but the 0.1% contraction was less than the 4.2% decrease in total car sales.
Norway remained the country with the highest percentage of electric car sales, with BEVs taking a 98% share of the total market thus far in 2026, followed by Denmark with an 80% share.
