2026 (Half-Year): Volkswagen, Skoda, and BMW were the top-selling electric car brands in Germany, with the Skoda Elroq and Tesla Model Y the best-selling BEV models.

New passenger battery-electric vehicle (all electric cars) registrations in Germany during the first half of 2026 increased by 48% to 368,006 BEV sales for a 25% share of the total new car market. Volkswagen, Skoda, and BMW were the top-selling electric car brands in Germany. The Skoda Elroq was the best-selling electric car model, while the VW Golf was the most popular car model overall.

German Electric Car Market in 2026 (HY)

In the first half of 2026, the German electric car market expanded by 48% to 368,006 all-electric cars, compared to 248,726 all-electric cars in the first semester of 2025. The market share of battery-electric vehicles in Germany increased to 24.8% from 18.4% a year ago.

The total German new passenger market increased by 5.5% to 1,484,393 cars (PKW) during the first six months of 2026.

Electric car sales in Germany were helped by the reintroduction of incentives, fear that geopolitical conflicts could keep petrol prices high, and the availability of more interesting electric car models.

The 20 top-selling battery electric vehicle (BEV) car brands in Germany in the first quarter of 2026, according to the KBA, were:

Volkswagen remained the top electric car brand in Germany during the first half of 2026 despite lower sales. VW sold 52,445 BEVs in Germany in the first half of 2025. Volkswagen’s share of the total German electric car market was only 13.4% compared to 18.4% for all car sales thus far in 2026.

Skoda was the second-largest electric car brand in Germany and Skoda produced the most popular electric car model — the Skoda Elrqoq. BMW was third.

Tesla continued its recovery in Germany and moved into fourth place by selling over 20,000 more cars in Germany thus far in 2026.

Chinese brands BYD and Leapmotor continued to make inroads in Germany.

The top-selling electric car model in Germany during the first half of 2026 was the Skoda Elroq, which was introduced only a year ago. It was followed by the Tesla Model Y, which staged a strong recovery.

The best-selling electric Volkswagen model in Germany was the VW ID3. Three of the top-ten electric car models in Germany were Volkswagens, with a further three from the Volkswagen Group.

The Mercedes CLA Class and BMW X1 were the best performers of the models available in both electric and combustion engine versions. For the Mercedes, most of the CLA cars were electric.
