Top 10 Car Model Name Plates in Germany (2026)
As the car parc includes all cars registered for use in Germany, it comes as no surprise that the top-ten list of the most popular car models closely resembles that of the best-selling car models in recent years. Slightly more surprising is that, except for the VW Tiguan, all top-ten car models in Germany in 2026 have fewer vehicles registered than in 2025.
The VW Golf has been Germany’s best-selling car since 1981, and it continues to dominate German roads, despite selling in lower volumes than previously. It is by far the most common car model nameplate in Germany, with over 3.2 million registered.
The VW Polo maintains its second place despite selling much more weakly in recent years. A major model change later in 2026 may revive the model name and bring an electric version for the first time.
The Opel Corsa is the only other model with more than a million cars registered in Germany at the start of 2026. Corsa registrations declined less than for the Opel Astra, which once competed with the Golf for the top slots in Germany.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class and BMW 3-Series are slightly out of position with new car sales, but not by much. Built quality and longevity may be premium, but as the more expensive cars new, they are also likely to be maintained to a higher standard and kept on the road longer than the smaller Volkswagen and Opel models.
The VW Passat, especially as variant (estate / station wagon), remains hugely popular new with salesmen and German businesses, and second-hand with German families.
The Skoda Fabia remains the most popular foreign car model in Germany.
The Volkswagen Tiguan is the only top-ten most popular car model in Germany with higher volumes registered at the start of 2026 than 2025. It swapped places with the Audi A4, which had the largest drop in volume of the top-ten models.
→ The most common models in the British car parc 2026 were the Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa, and VW Golf.
Top 30 Car Models in Germany in 2026
A few salient figures from the 30 most popular car models in Germany as on 1 January 2026:
The Skoda Octavia moved ahead of both the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus, as both model names disappeared from new cars. (An electric Fiesta is likely from 2027.)
The Volkswagen Transporter is the most popular large van in Germany in 2026. If the 141,082 registered as mobile campervans (Wohnmobile) are added, the 749,856 Transporters make the VW bus the 11th most popular model nameplate in Germany.
It is a similar effect, but in reverse, for the Fiat Ducato. The 442,126 vehicles at 26th are campervans, while only a further 8,551 are vans (Utilities).
The Fiat Ducato was also the most popular foreign car in Germany, if brands with a German manufacturing history (Opel, Ford) and German ownership (Skoda, Seat, Mini) are excluded. Similarly, the most popular imported passenger car models were the Fiat 500 and Toyota Yaris, which only just made it onto the top-30 list.
Most Popular Electric Car Models in Germany in 2026
The most common electric car models registered for use on German roads as on 1 January 2026, according to the KBA, were:
| R | Electric Car Brand & Model | 2026 | 2025 | % Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 101 | VW ID.3 | 116,053 | 91,813 | 26.4 |
| 112 | TESLA MODEL Y | 106,184 | 97,608 | 8.8 |
| 121 | VW ID.4, ID.5 | 97,120 | 82,420 | 17.8 |
| 133 | TESLA MODEL 3 | 81,352 | 80,436 | 1.1 |
| 135 | SKODA ENYAQ | 80,970 | 64,914 | 24.7 |
| 139 | RENAULT ZOE | 79,417 | 81,292 | -2.3 |
Note: R refers to the overall model rank position in Germany in 2026.
Weak Tesla sales in Germany in 2025 allowed the VW ID3 to move ahead of the Tesla Model Y and become the most popular electric car model in use in Germany in 2026. The VW ID. 4 also moved well ahead of the Tesla Model 3.
The Skoda Enyaq was a fast riser. For many German buyers, it is the car the ID4, on which it is based, should have been. (It is expected that Volkswagen will drop the ID4 name later in 2026 in favor of ID Tiguan.)
The Renault Zoe, an early all-electric pioneer and not sold new for several years, only lost 2.3% of already registered cars. It was the sixth most common all-electric car in Germany.
