2024 (January to December): new passenger battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) contracted by 1.3% to only 1,993,102 all-electric car sales. The market share of new electric cars sold in Europe slipped to 15.4% and only 13.6% in the EU. The Tesla Model Y was again the best-selling electric car model in Europe in 2024.

New passenger vehicle registrations in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) increased by 0.9% in 2024 to 12,963,614 cars. Battery-electric car sales in Europe were 1.3% lower to 1,993,102 all-electric cars for a market share of 15.4% compared to 15.7%. In the EU, the share of electric cars slipped to 13.6% from 14.6% in 2023. (See market share per European country below.)

Most of the damage was done in the German new car market where battery-electric car sales were down 27% or over 140,000 vehicles. In contrast, electric car sales in Britain increased by a fifth to make the British electric car market the largest in Europe in 2024.

The outlook for battery-electric car sales in Europe is positive for 2025, not least because of new EU regulations that will force carmakers to reduce emissions of new cars sold in 2025. The VDA predicts that electric car sales in Germany will increase by 75% to 666,000 BEV sales in 2025.

Of the traditional larger European brands, only BMW has managed to sell more than a fifth of new cars in Europe as all-electric models.

All-electric cars were only the main source of energy for new cars sold in two European countries in 2024: Norway and Denmark. The Netherlands, Sweden, and Malta were the only other countries in Europe with battery-electric cars exceeding a third of new car sales in 2024.

Electric car sales in Germany fell well below expectation in 2024 but of the top-5 car markets in Europe, market penetration of electric vehicles remained very low in both Italy and Spain.

However, it predicted that new EU emission regulations will force carmakers to sell more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 with the sales of battery-electric cars predicted to grow a hefty 67% to around 2,650,000 all-electric cars.
