In full-year 2024, Volkswagen and Stellantis were the largest carmakers in Europe while VW, Toyota, and BMW were the top-selling brands.

2024 (January to December): the Volkswagen Group was again the largest car manufacturing conglomerate in Europe with a market share of 26%. VW was also the top-selling brand despite flat sales. The European new car market increased by only 0.9% in 2024 to just less than 13 million new passenger vehicle registrations. The Dacia Sandero was the top-selling car model in Europe in 2024 and the Tesla Model Y was the favorite electric car model.

Largest Carmakers in Europe in 2024 (Full Year)
In 2024, the Volkswagen Group increased its market share to 26.3% (from 25.9%) to easily maintain its position as Europe’s largest car manufacturing conglomerate. With the exception of Audi, all the larger brands in the Volkswagen Group increased car sales in Europe in 2024. Skoda, Seat, and Cupra increased sales by over a tenth each.
In contrast, the Stellantis Group lost 1.3% market share to finish second with 15.1% of all new car sold in Europe in 2024. Peugeot sales increased slightly but Fiat sales were down by a fifth and Opel / Vauxhall sales were nearly 10% lower.
The Renault Group had a slight increase in sales with the Dacia brand increasing sales by 4%. The Dacia Sandero was the best-selling car model in Europe in 2024.
The Hyundai Group sales were down with Hyundai brand sales flat and Kia sales sharply down.
The Toyota Group was the most improved of the top carmakers in Europe in 2024. Sales increased to over a million to pass the BMW Group. Both Toyota and Lexus sales improved significantly.
The BMW Group had flat sales with Mini sales down by nearly a fifth. Mini suffered from a major model change and a drop in the popularity of electric cars in Europe in 2024.
Mercedes-Benz Group sales were slightly down with Mercedes-Benz brand sales up while Smart sales were more than halved. It was the worst performing major car brand in Europe in 2024.
Ford had another miserable sales year with unit sales sharply down as the manufacturer dropped unprofitable high-volume models such as the Fiesta.
Volvo was the most improved large car brand in Europe in 2024 — only Mitsubishi performed better.
Tesla sales were down 11%.

Top-Selling Car Brands in Europe in 2024
Volkswagen and Toyota were again the two best-selling car brands in Europe in 2024. VW just outperformed the market while Toyota sales increased by 12%. Among the top brands, only Skoda did better.
Audi was the only top-ten brand with weaker sales in Europe and slipped from third to only seventh. BMW moved up one place to third while Skoda leapfrogged Renault to fourth. Its highest position ever.
Renault maintained fifth place while Mercedes improved one position. Peugeot maintained the same position from last year while Dacia and Hyundai each improved one rank position. Hyundai entered the top-ten list at the expense of Kia which slipped to eleventh.
The Dacia Sandero was the top-selling car model in Europe in 2024.
