Electric Car Market in Europe in 2026 (February)
The European new car market expanded only slightly in February 2026: 1.7% to 978,190 cars (from 961,426 vehicles in February 2025). According to JATO, battery-electric car sales increased by a stronger 16% to 189,885 all-electric cars for a market share of 19.4%, compared to 164,376 BEVs and a 17.1% share in February 2025.

Half of all new Volkswagens sold in Europe were still either purely petrol or diesel powered in February 2026. For Skoda, this percentage was even higher, but Skoda also had the largest percentage of all-electric cars.
For Toyota, full hybrids remained very important, while electric cars formed less than a tenth of its sales in Europe. Both Toyota and Renault produced only small numbers of plug-in electric hybrids, which remained very popular with German carmakers due to company tax incentives.

Tesla regained the lead as Europe’s top electric car brand in February 2026, but it lost further market share. Volkswagen sales were weaker, while its sister brand, Skoda, more than doubled electric car sales. Renault increased sales despite weaker 5 sales.
BMW and Audi both had lower sales, partly blamed on model transitions but also increased competition, which allowed Mercedes-Benz to catch up with its most direct competition.
BYD almost doubled sales while Leapmotor, a Chinese brand and part of the Stellantis group, increased sales by almost 800%.
