2024 (January to December): Stellantis, Renault, and Volkswagen were again the best-selling car manufacturing groups in France. Renault, Peugeot, and Dacia were again the top-selling car brands but all three had weaker sales. Toyota moved ahead of VW while Citroen slipped behind VW. Tesla was the worst-performing car brand in France in 2024 with sales down by more than a third.
In 2024, the French new car market contracted by 3.17% to 1,718,416 cars, Renault, Peugeot, and Dacia were again the best-selling car brands while the Renault Clio and Peugeot 208 were the top-selling car models in France.

Largest Carmakers in France in 2024
Stellantis was again the largest car manufacturing group in France in 2024 but lost market share with overall sales down nearly 7%. All of Stellantis’ larger brands lost market share in France with DS, Fiat, and Citroen contracting by double digits.
The Renault Group gained some market share despite weaker sales. Dacia sales were down 7% while Renault sales were flat.
The Volkswagen Group was the largest foreign carmaker in France in 2024. The Group sales increased by almost 6% with Skoda, Seat, and Cupra adding the most volume while Porsche sales were almost doubled.
Toyota performed the best of the larger carmakers in France with sales up nearly a fifth in 2025. Lexus sales were up by more than a quarter but volumes were relatively low.

20 Top-Selling Car Brands in France in 2024
For the second consecutive year, Renault, Peugeot, and Dacia were the top-selling car brands in France in 2024. All three marques had weaker sales but Renault managed to gain some market share.
Toyota was the most improved top-ten brand in France in 2024 and leapfrogged Volkswagen to become the fourth-largest car brand. VW sales were flat.
Citroën was the worst-performing top ten brand and slipped two rank positions in France in 2024.
Last year’s seventh-largest brand, Tesla, was the worst-performing top-30 car brand in France in 2024 with sales down by more than a third. Tesla slipped from seventh to 14th allowing many other brands to gain one rank position.
Ford had another dismal year in France in 2024 and slipped from 10th to 14th allowing Audi and Hyundai to make the top-ten list.
The best-performing top-20 brands in France in 2024 were Volvo, Seat, and Toyota.
The worst-performing top-20 brands in France in 2024 were Tesla, Nissan, and Fiat.
