2024 (January to December): Volkswagen was again the best-selling car brand in the UK but BMW moved into second place followed by Audi and Kia. Ford slipped to only fifth place overall with sales in Britain in 2024 down by almost a quarter. Vauxhall also had a weak year and dropped out of the top ten for the first time in decades.

In 2024, the new car market in Britain expanded slightly by 2.61%% to 1,952,778 newly registered passenger vehicles. Volkswagen was the top-selling brand in the UK for the fourth consecutive year. The Ford Puma was again the favorite car model of the British in 2024 and the Tesla Model Y remained the best-selling battery-electric car in the UK.

Top 10 Largest Car Brands in the UK in 2024

For the fourth consecutive year, Volkswagen was the best-selling car marque in the UK. VW sales increased in line with the market to leave market share unchanged at 8.52% of the total British new car market.

BMW was the second-largest car brand in Britain for the first time ever in 2024. BMW increased sales by 12% to move up two rank positions. Audi maintained third place despite weaker sales while Kia improved from sixth.

Ford, for decades the top car brand in Britain slipped from second to only fifth with sales down by nearly a quarter. It was the worst-performing major car band in the UK in 2024.

Mercedes-Benz moved up three rank positions with sales up 17% — the most improved top ten brand in Britain in 2024.

Toyota slipped two places while Nissan maintained its eighth place. Hyundai improved one position while MG is the only new entrant in the top ten list.

Vauxhall slipped out of the top ten list of best-selling car brands in Britain in 2024. Sales were down by 21% — only Ford performed worse.
