Largest Carmakers in France in 2022

Stellantis remained the largest car manufacturing group by far in France in 2022 despite bleeding market share. With the exception of niche brands Alfa Romeo and Maserati, all other brands of the Stellantis conglomerate had lower sales. Dodge was the worst-performing brand in France overall in 2022 but that is a statistical anomaly — more worrying for Stellantis must be the weak performance by both Citroën and Peugeot.

The Renault Group was the second-largest carmaker in France in 2022 and narrowly outperformed the broader market due to the strong performance of Dacia. Alpine also increased sales but the numbers were low.

The Volkswagen Group was the third-largest car producer in France in 2022 but also performed weakly with only niche brands increasing sales. A strong performance by Cupra could not make up for lost sales by Seat.

BMW Group sales were flat while Toyota gained market share with Toyota replacing Volkswagen as the most popular foreign car brand in France in 2022.

Ford was the best-performing carmaker in France in 2022 while Hyundai and Kia also increased sales volumes. Nissan also had stronger sales while Daimler outperformed the market.

20 Top-Selling Car Brands in France in 2022

Peugeot and Renault remained the two largest car brands in France in 2022 despite both losing market share. Five years ago, in 2017, Peugeot sold 366,872 cars while Renault was the market leader with 416,578 sales. Dacia took third place for the first time with an increase in sales while Citroen slipped to fourth with sales down by a fifth.

Toyota outsold Volkswagen to become the best-selling foreign car brand in France. VW and Mercedes-Benz sales were down but both narrowly outperformed the market.

Hyundai and Kia both increased sales but the top performer amongst the top ten car brands in France in 2022 was Ford with sales up 7.6%. BMW and Audi had weaker sales and both slipped out of the top ten.

Tesla was the most improved brand of the top marques with sales up by 10%.

The worst-performing car brands in France in 2022 were Dodge with sales down 100% but more significant was the halving of sales of Seat and Jeep (and Rolls-Royce).

The best-performing car marques in France in 2022 were Alfa Romeo and Cupra which nearly doubled sales and Maserati. Tesla and Ford were the most-improved larger brands.
