Car production in Germany in 2025 increased slightly to 4,151,800 vehicles.
In 2025, the total German new car market expanded by 1.4% to 2,857,591 vehicles. The best-selling car brand in Germany was again Volkswagen, with the VW Golf the top-selling car model. Volkswagen was the top electric car brand.

In 2025, total new motorized vehicle registrations in Germany contracted by 2.4% to 3,410,587 vehicles (Kraftfahrzeuge) — compared to 3,495,412 in 2024. Passenger cars (PKW) registration increased by 1.4% to 2,857,591 new passenger vehicle registrations — around 40,000 more cars than in 2024. Sales of motorcycles and heavy commercial vehicles were lower.

According to the VDA, car production in Germany in 2025 increased by 2% to 4,151,800 vehicles, of which 3,174,900 were exported (a minimal increase from the 3,173,500 cars exported in 2024).

The German new car market struggled for much of 2025, with monthly sales below those of recent years. However, sales improved towards the end of the year.
New incentives and tax breaks were announced for electric vehicles from January 2026. This should end uncertainty in the market, which has been a major brake on sales since the unexpected suspension of very generous subsidies for battery-electric cars in mid-December 2023.

German Passenger Car Market in 2025 (Full Year)
In 2025, a record 39.5% of cars registered for the first time in Germany were hybrids (+19%), including plug-in hybrids (10.9% — an increase of 62.3%). Purely petrol car sales contracted by 21.6% for a 27.2% market share (35.2% in 2024). Diesel sales were 18.3% lower for a 13.8% market share of the German new car market in 2025.
The sales of battery-electric cars in Germany in 2025 increased by 43.2% to 545,142 BEVs sales compared to the weak sales of only 380,609 electric cars in Germany in 2024. The market share of all-electric cars thus increased to 19.1% from only 13.5% in 2024, 18.4% in 2023, and 17.7% in 2022.
