In full year 2024, Toyota was the largest car producer and best-selling car brand in Japan despite lower sales in a weak new vehicle market.

2024 (January to December): Toyota remained the best-selling vehicle manufacturer and largest car brand in Japan despite underperforming in a very weak market. Suzuki was again the second top-selling car brand but Honda and Nissan outsold Daihatsu which lost 40% of sales following a test scandal. The Japanese new vehicle market contracted by 7.5% to 4.4 million vehicles. The Toyota Corolla was the top-selling car model in Japan in 2024 and the Honda N-Box was the top-selling mini car.

Japan New Vehicle Market Analysis in 2024 (Full Year)

Total new motorized vehicle registrations in Japan in 2024 (January to December) contracted by 7.5% to 4,421,494 vehicles compared to 4,779,086 vehicles sold in 2023. This number includes passenger cars, mini cars, commercial vehicles, mini commercial vehicles, and buses.

The Japanese car market was shocked by the testing scandal at Daihatsu that came to light at the end of 2023. Daihatsu was immediately severely punished by the car-buying public (in addition to further measurements by the relevant authorities) and lost nearly half its annual sales in Japan in 2024. Toyota, owner of Daihatsu, was also blamed and had to take some models sharing the same components off the market.
