In full-year 2025, Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and BMW were again the best-selling car brands in Germany, with Skoda again the top foreign marque.

In 2025, Volkswagen increased its market share to 19.6% and easily remained the largest car brand in Germany. Mercedes-Benz was the second-best-selling car brand in Germany, narrowly outselling BMW. VW-owned Skoda maintained its fourth place, followed by Audi and Seat. Tesla was the worst-performing top-30 brand in Germany in 2025.

In 2025, the total German new car market expanded by 1.4% to 2,857,591 vehicles. The best-selling car brand in Germany was again Volkswagen, with the VW Golf the top-selling car model. Volkswagen was the top electric car brand, and the VW ID7 was the top electric car model.

Top-Selling Car Brands in Germany in 2025 (Full Year)

In 2025, the top ten largest car brands in Germany maintained their relative rank positions from a year ago. Volkswagen maintained its traditional position as Germany’s best-selling car brand in 2025. Germany’s largest carmaker increased its market share to 19.6% (19.1% in 2024).

Second-placed Mercedes-Benz had flat sales just below the German market average, for 9.1% of the total German new car market in 2024.

BMW had strong sales in Germany in 2025. BMW claimed third place for the first time ever in 2024 and came close to outselling Mercedes in 2025.

VW-owned Skoda was the most-improved top-ten brand and confirmed its position as Germany’s favorite foreign car brand by improving to fourth place. Two further brands from the Volkswagen Group also increased sales: Audi and Seat.

Opel and Ford had mixed successes in Germany but maintained their rank positions. Opel was the worst-performing top-ten brand.

Hyundai and Toyota again rounded out the top ten list despite weaker sales.

A few further salient statistics from the best-selling car brands in Germany in 2025:

  • BYD outsold Tesla, although not all BYD cars available in Germany are electric.
  • Two electric-only car brands had among the worst performances of established brands. Tesla sales were down 48% and Smart sales were down 62%, while electric car sales increased by over 40%.
  • Leapmotor entered the top 30 with sales up almost 4,000%.
  • Alpine more than doubled sales but still sold fewer cars in Germany in 2025 than Ferrari.
  • The most improved of the 30 larger brands in Germany in 2025 were all Chinese brands: BYD, Leapmotor, and MG.
  • The worst-performing top 30 brands in Germany in 2025 were Tesla, Mitsubishi, and Porsche.
