2025 (Q1): Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault were the best-selling car manufacturing groups in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) with VW, Toyota, and BMW the top brands.

During the first quarter of 2025, the Volkswagen Group was again the largest car producer in Europe (European Union, EFTA, and UK) and gained market share at the expense of second-placed Stellantis. Volkswagen was also the best-selling car brand in Europe, followed by Toyota and BMW. The Dacia Sandero was the top-selling car model in Europe in the first three months of 2025 and the Tesla Model Y was Europe’s favorite electric car model. The European new car market contracted by 0.4% during the first quarter of 2025 to 3,382,057 passenger vehicle registrations.

Top Car Manufacturers in Europe in 2025 (Q1)
The Volkswagen Group increased its lead as Europe’s largest carmaker during the first quarter of 2025, with sales up 5.7% for a 25.9% share of the total European new car market. Volkswagen brand increased market share to 11% while Cupra was the most improved larger brand.
Stellantis, in contrast, lost two percentage points of market share — from 17.6% to 15.5%. Although Peugeot slightly increased sales, all the other larger brands in the group saw sales contract by over a fifth.
Renault Group increased market share by a percentage point to 10.2%. Alpine was the most improved of all the brands individually named in the ACEA statistics.
The most improved carmaker in Europe was SAIC (MG) with sales up by a third while Tesla was the worst performer of the larger carmakers with sales down by 37%.

Top 20 Car Brands in Europe in 2025 (Q1)
Volkswagen brand increased car sales in Europe by 12.6% to increase its market share by over a percentage point to 10.8% of the European new car market in the first quarter of 2025. Second-placed Toyota lost market share while BMW just outperformed the broader market.
Skoda and Peugeot had slightly better sales than a year ago. Renault was the most improved of the top ten brands in Europe at the start of 2025.
Mercedes and Audi had slightly weaker sales, while Dacia sales were also flat. Most of the other top brands had weaker sales.
The most improved top 20 car brands in Europe during the first quarter of 2025 were Cupra and MG (SAIC), while Fiat and Open / Vauxhall were the worst performers. Tesla slipped out of the top 20 brands.
