2025 (Full Year) Europe: Best-Selling Car Manufacturers and Brands

In full-year 2025, Volkswagen and Stellantis were the largest carmakers in Europe, while VW, Toyota, and Skoda were the top-selling brands.

2025 (January to December): the Volkswagen Group was again the largest car manufacturing conglomerate in Europe with a market share of 27%, followed by Stellantis with 14%. VW was also the top-selling brand with sales double the market average. Stellantis struggled with sales of all its larger brands contracting. Renault and BMW made gains. Tesla was the worst-performing major brand with sales down over a quarter, while BYD increased sales by 270%.

The European new car market in 2025 expanded by 2.4% to 13,271,270 new passenger vehicle registrations. Germany was the largest European country and the leading electric car market. Volkswagen was the largest carmaker and best-selling electric car brand. The Dacia Sandero was again the top-selling car model in Europe in 2025.

Largest Carmakers in Europe in 2025 (Full Year)

In 2025, the Volkswagen Group increased its market share to 26.9% (26.3% in 2024 and 25.9% in 2023) to easily maintain its position as Europe’s largest car manufacturing conglomerate. VW and Skoda gained market share, while Audi sales were flat. Losses at Seat were balanced by strong growth in Cupra sales. Porsche struggled.

In contrast, the Stellantis Group lost almost a percentage point of market share to finish second with 14.3% of all new cars sold in Europe in 2025. Peugeot sales were flat, while Opel / Vauxhall and Citroen sales were slightly 10% lower. Fiat sales were down by a tenth. Alfa Romeo sales were up by a third.

The Renault Group increased sales for a 10.2% shae of the European new car market in 2025. Both Renault and Dacia increased sales. The Dacia Sandero was the best-selling car model in Europe in both 2025 and 2024.

The Hyundai Group sales were slightly down, with Hyundai brand sales flat and Kia sales lower.

The BMW Group increased sales for both the BMW and Mini brands. BMW moved ahead of the Toyota Group, which had sales falling below a million cars in Europe in 2025.

Mercedes-Benz and Ford had flat sales, while Volvo sales were down by a tenth.

SAIC Motor (MG) increased sales by quarter to move ahead of Nissan and Tesla.

Tesla was the worst-performing larger car brand in 2025, with sales down by 26.9%. BYD was the best-performing brand with sales up almost ten times more — +268.6%.

Group sales were slightly down, with Mercedes-Benz brand sales up while Smart sales were more than halved. It was the worst-performing major car brand in Europe in 2024.

Top-Selling Car Brands in Europe in 2025

Volkswagen and Toyota were again the two best-selling car brands in Europe in 2025. VW increased market share with European new car sales well above the market average. In contrast, Toyota sales were down 7.4%, making it the only top-ten brand with significantly weaker sales in 2025.

Skoda was the most improved car brand in Europe in 2025 and moved ahead of BMW to become the third largest car brand in Europe for the first time ever. All the other top-ten car brands in Europe maintained the same rank position as in 2024, although only Renault and Dacia outperformed the broader market.
