Latest European Car Market Statistics: 2026: January; 2025 (Full Year): Market Overview, Sales by Country, Electric, Brands.

European New Car Market in January 2026

New passenger vehicle registrations in the European Union (EU) by month January 2026.

New passenger vehicle registrations in the European Union (EU) contracted by 3.9% to only 799,625 cars in January 2026, compared to 831,945 cars sold in January 2025. New passenger vehicle registrations in the larger European region, including the EU, EFTA, and the UK, contracted by a more moderate 3.5% to 961,382 cars (996,016 in January 2025). January is usually the second weakest month, after August, for new car sales in Europe.

Of the five largest European car markets, both Germany and France had sales weaker by 6.6%, while sales increased in Britain (3.4%), Italy (6.2%), and Spain (1.1%). The weakest performance was in Norway (-76% — see BEV sales below), while of the medium-sized markets, sales were also sharply down in Belgium, Sweden, and the Netherlands.

Car Sales by Power or Energy Source in Europe in January 2026

Car sales EU by power source and BEV in January 2026

Battery-electric car sales in the EU increased by 24.2% for a market share of 19.3% in January 2026. BEV sales in Europe (EU, EFTA, UK) increased by only 13.9% – a weak increase largely attributable to the weak Norwegian market.

A change in the tax regime in Norway led to electric car sales almost doubling in December 2025, followed by the expected collapse in sales in January 2026. This is a classic policy-driven pull-forward distortion, and the situation should normalize in coming months.

In Germany, the opposite is occurring, but with much higher volumes involved. There is finally some clarity on incentives for buying electric cars, and electric car sales increased by a quarter while the overall German new car market contracted by 6.6% in January 2026.

Electric car sales in France increased by a strong 52% to surpass Britain again and become the second-largest electric car market in Europe in January 2026. As is often the case at the start of a new calendar year, the total Italian new car market was larger than the French one, but electric car sales in Italy lagged well behind other important markets.
