During the first six months of 2025, Volkswagen Group remained the largest car manufacturer in Europe, followed by a weakened Stellantis. Volkswagen was also the leading car brand, followed by Toyota. Skoda moved ahead of BMW. The European new car market contracted by 1% during the first semester of 2025.

Top-Selling Carmakers and Brands in Europe in 2025 (Half Year)

The Volkswagen Group increased its lead as Europe’s largest car manufacturing conglomerate with market share climbing one percentage point to 27% of the European new car market. Both large brands — VW and Skoda — increased sales while Audi sales were lower to slip below Mercedes-Benz. Cupra and Seat basically swapped numbers, with Cupra assumed to earned higher profits. Porsche sales were sharply down.

Stellantis sales were down 9% to lose 2% market share. Peugeot sales were up 5% but all the other larger brands in the group had sales sharply down. Fiat sales were down by a quarter. Alfa Romeo improved by a third but numbers are low.

The Renault Group gained market share with the Dacia Sandero and Renault Clio the two most popular car models in Europe during the first half of 2025.

Hyundai and Kia sales were lower. BMW sales slipped below Skoda while Mini made strong gains.

Toyota sales were sharply down but Toyota remained the second largest car brand in Europe thus far in 2025.

Mercedes sales were flat but Smart sales were down by another 64%. Smart sales were lower than a thousand cars per month.
