New passenger battery-electric vehicle (all electric cars) registrations in Germany during the first quarter of 2025 increased by nearly 40% for a 17% of the total new car market. Volkswagen, BMW, and Skoda were the top-selling electric car brands in Germany and the VW ID7 was the best-selling electric car model. Tesla sales in Germany were sharply down.

German Electric Car Market in 2025 (Q1)
The German electric car market expanded by 38.9% during the first quarter of 2025, from 81,337 to 112,968 battery electric car sales. In contrast, the total German new car market contracted by 4.3% from 694,785 to 664,571 new passenger vehicle registrations during the first quarter of 2025.
The German new car market was heavily influenced by political uncertainty. Elections were held in Germany in February 2025, but a new coalition government is only expected to take power in May 2025. As a result, any decision on tax breaks or other subsidies for electric cars, or cars in general, is not expected until mid-2025.

Volkswagen was the top electric car brand in Germany during the first three months of 2025. VW electric car sales almost tripled from 8,637 and a market share of 10.6% in the first quarter of 2024 to over 25,000 and a 22.5% share of the total German BEV market at the start of 2025.
Tesla saw its share of the German electric car market collapse from 16.1% during the first quarter of 2025 to only 4.4% at the start of 2025. Tesla’s sales volumes were down 62% from 13,068 to only 4,935 cars. Although retooling for an updated Model Y is partly blamed for the lower sales, few market observers doubt that the major cause is Elon Musk’s open support for far-right parties during the German Federal elections.

The top-selling electric car model in Germany during the first quarter of 2025 was the Volkswagen ID7 followed by the VW ID4 / ID5. Three of the most popular electric car models in Germany were made by Volkswagen, while a further four were from other brands in the larger Volkswagen Group.
Sales of the Tesla Model Y slipped from 11,045 in the first three months of 2024 to only 3,442 at the start of 2025. Model 3 sales were down from 1,790 to only 1,408 (30th place).
