The Mercedes-Benz W123 cars – as sedan, coupé, and T wagon – were hugely popular in the 1970s and early 1980s in Germany, In 1980, the Mercedes W123 sold around two thousand more cars in Germany than the VW Golf. It was the last car model to have outsold the Golf in a calendar year in Germany.
The W123 is the second most popular oldtimer historic classic car in Germany – the Golf is still not amongst the top 15 most-popular historic cars.
