The Volkswagen Golf was again the favorite car model of the Germans in 2023, although it was not always the top car in monthly sales, including being outsold by the Fiat 500. The Golf celebrates 50 years on the car market in 2024 and only a small update is expected before it changes into an electric car only towards the end of the decade.
The VW Golf has been the best-selling car model in Germany for every calendar year since 1981. It was last outsold in 1980 — by the Mercedes-Benz W123 (E-Class). However, its importance for Volkswagen is declining — as recently as 2015, VW sold over 270,000 Golfs in Germany.
The Golf was the only top-ten best-selling car model in Germany in the same position in 2023 as in 2022. The VW Tiguan and VW T-Roc swapped positions with increased sales volumes — both models are generally considered to be very profitable for Volkswagen. The Tiguan was Germany’s favorite cross-country vehicle (Geländewagen) and the T-Roc Germany’s best-selling SUV according to the official definitions.
The Opel Corsa slipped one position despite stronger sales while the VW Passat, which is to receive a well-published model update in 2024, moved up from seventh. The Fiat 500 slipped two positions with lower sales but remained the favorite foreign car model.
The Mini slipped one place despite stronger sales while the Tesla Model Y improved two places from a year ago.
The Mercedes-Benz C-Class and Skoda Octavia re-entered the top ten, while the Ford Kuga dropped to 40th from 8th and the BMW 3-Series from 9th to 16th.
