Volkswagen replaced Telsa as the best-selling brand of all-electric cars in Europe during the first half of 2025. The Tesla Model Y remained the top-selling electric car model in Europe despite weaker sales. Volkswagen made strong gains with sales of the ID4, ID7, and ID3 increasing. The European new car market contracted by 1% during the first half of 2025 but electric car sales were up by a quarter.

Volkswagen replaced Tesla as the largest electric car brand in Europe during the first half of 2025. VW electric car sales increased 78% while Tesla sales were down by a third. (The total European electric car market expanded by a quarter during the first half of 2025.) BMW remained ahead of Audi despite much weaker increases in electric car sales.

Skoda increased sales by nearly 150% while Renault and Kia increased sales by nearly two-thirds. Volvo sales were down by a third.

Just outside the top-ten list, BYD increased sales by 143%. Ford, Citroen, Mini, Porsche, and Xpeng also had strong increases. Outside the top 15 brands, Smart sales were down by another 63% to below 6,000 cars.

The Tesla Model Y was again the best-selling electric car model in Europe during the first semester of 2025 but sales were down 33% following a 26% contraction in the first semester of 2023. Tesla Model Y sales were as follows during the first six months of the last three years:

Tesla Model 3 sales were also sharply down while Volkswagen made strong gains with the VW ID4, ID3, and high-earning ID7. Three completely new models made it into the top ten best-selling all-electric cars in Europe during the first half of 2025: the Kia EV3, Renault 5, and Skoda Elroq.
